Genealogy & Local History

If you are interested in genealogy and local history, then you've come to the right place!

The Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center has extensive local history and family history resources.  First, check out the "free local databases" link at the left.  It will allow you to search our local indexes by person or subject.  Also, all published items are in the Library's online catalog so you'll want to search there as well.

Don't stop there, however, as we have many, many resources that are not included in the online index or the catalog.

Local history materials are described in more detail under "collections" but include books, maps, archive and manuscript collections, pamphlets, videos, and oral history tapes.  The photograph collection contains more than 50,000 local images.  The Center also serves as the archives for the City of Davenport.

The genealogy collection emphasizes research in Scott County, Iowa as well as other Iowa counties.  We also have resources on the New England states and states on the migration routes used by those who settled in the Scott County area.  The Center also houses the 1700+ title collection of the Scott County Iowa Genealogical Society.

The Library subscribes to a number of genealogy databases, such as Ancestry Library Edition, Fold 3 and NewspaperArchive.com.  Some databases can be used from home by Davenport Public Library cardholders and all can be used by anyone who visits any of our three locations.  See the information under "Research Tools" for details about the databases.

Watch our blog for information about special events, new acquisitions, and interesting local history vignettes.
